We’ve got a lot of dreams for the ranch. We’ve wanted to get more chickens and create a small egg empire (haha not really but kind of). We want to create a functional garden with raised beds, filled with greens, vegetables and flowers. We’ve got ideas of what we want our lifestyle to be like, and will slowly be adding more and more of that this year. We want Max to be raised with a similar work ethic, and know the importance of chores around your home. Gardening will be fun, taking care of our animals teaches compassion and being able to be outside more is definitely something we are working on.
I wanted to write all of my goals and dreams for the garden here for two reasons. 1. It helps keep me on track. Sourcing imagery online for inspiration can get out of hand. Keeping a design and idea here will help me stay on track. 2. It holds me accountable. I’ve loved growing up on the ranch, but I’ve got to be honest, it wasn’t until I had Max that I found the important of chores and gardening.
I grew up with responsibilities around the ranch like taking care of the yard or feeding our animals, but as a child I wasn’t always willing to do them. Heck, to be honest, somedays I still don’t want to do chores. But, as an adult raising a baby in a similar lifestyle, I want things to be fun for him!
We’re big fans of Chip & Joanna Gaines, and have always loved how they utilize their home for growing food and raising animals. It’s so special to have a role model in that way who appreciates similar things you do. We’ve loved seeing how they’ve made their garden at home functional, and hope to have a similar layout.
Our friends, Daniel & Ashley Kim, have a garden at their home and they’ve done a great job of teaching their daughter the importance and knowledge of healthy nutrition. Being able to grow our food and enjoying doing so without the pressure of needing to, is exciting for me. One of the things I am looking forward to most is making all of our beds above ground. This will help make weeding easier and bring things eye level or Max when he is exploring around outside. Knowing he can grab a piece of asparagus or snap pea fresh off the plant for snack makes me so happy.
I am also excited to start growing some flowers around here. Not sure if we will sell them or offer them to florists around the valley, but I know they will be beautiful and make me happy. We’ll share more along the way.
